Technology is best understood when tinkering with it, taking things apart and back together and building something yourself for fun or to solve an everyday need - or both.
Technology should be approached with a hacker mindset, because that is well suited for the task. While "hacking" got a bad reputation because the official wordings of the news media could or would not regularly differentiate between "cracking" and "hacking", that should not deter us. Actually testing technology by trying to make it do what you want and not remain in the boundaries of what designers intended a tool to do, opens up a lot of possibilities.
The added knowledge about a tool will make it easier for you to repair, adapt or - in the case of digital tools - re-program. It will also allow you to better judge when - and when not - to use a certain tool for a task. You also gain a lot of choices by being able to adapt a tool to the way you think it should work. When you only got a hammer, everything looks like a nail, but with more tools come more - perhaps even new - ways of doing things that benefit the users.
